德國VOITH(福伊特)液力偶合器的工作原理以液體為工作介質的一種非剛性聯軸器，又稱液力聯軸器。液力偶合器的泵輪和渦輪組成一個可使液體循環流動的密閉工作腔，泵輪裝在輸入軸上，渦輪裝在輸出軸上。動力機(內燃機、電動機等)帶動輸入軸旋轉時，液體被離心式泵輪甩出。這種高速液體進入渦輪后即推動渦輪旋轉，將從泵輪獲得的能量傳遞給輸出軸。最后液體返回泵輪，形成周而復始的流動。液力偶合器靠液體與泵輪、渦輪的葉片相互作用產生動量矩的變化來傳遞扭矩。它的輸出扭矩等于輸入扭矩減去摩擦力矩，所以它的輸出扭矩恒小于輸入扭矩。液力偶合器輸入軸與輸出軸間靠液體聯系，工作構件間不存在剛性聯接。液力偶合器的特點是：能消除沖擊和振動；輸出轉速低于輸入轉速，兩軸的轉速差隨載荷的增大而增加；過載保護性能和起動性能好，載荷過大而停轉時輸入軸仍可轉動，不致造成動力機的損壞；當載荷減小時，輸出軸轉速增加直到接近于輸入軸的轉速，使傳遞扭矩趨于零。液力耦合器的傳動效率等于輸出軸轉速與輸入軸轉速之比。一般液力偶合器正常工況的轉速比在0.95以上時可獲得較高的效率。液力偶合器的特性因工作腔與泵輪、渦輪的形狀不同而有差異。它一般靠殼體自然散熱，不需要外部冷卻的供油系統。如將液力偶合器的油放空，偶合器就處于脫開狀態，能起離合器的作用。
